One grey afternoon, while lingering in the music archive of the Zurich Central Library, Yves Theiler comes across the three surviving compositions by the reformer Huldrych Zwingli. He pauses. Wait a minute, Huldrych composed... and played five instruments... But have any signed works by him survived? Soon Theiler is holding three piano scores that have been perfectly transcribed into today's notation and is ready to get started.
After a short play of Herr, nun heb den Wagen himself, there is amazement. This is very exciting music for the time, written in the style of the so-called courtly tunes! Theiler decides to take this music into the present day, into the world of the interfaces between old and new, between classical and jazz. This leads to the crossover project "It's Huldrych!" with the formation Yves Theiler Trio plus Uwe Steinmetz on soprano saxophone. Two songs from the Reformed Church Hymnal and a thematically appropriate composition by Theiler are included with Zwingli's three compositions. The notated material is juxtaposed with improvisations; the arrangements and compositions are written specifically for the sound space of a church.
